BVB Beats Essen 1-0 - Winning Goal From Daniel Gordon

[16.07.] A 20th minute goal from Daniel Gordon gave Borussia Dortmund and new coach Jürgen Klopp their first test match victory in preparation for the 2008/2009 Bundesliga season after recording draws in each of the other test matches. In a benefit match against Rot-Weiss Essen , both teams had an impressive first half and a bad second half.

The 4,000 spectators in the Renchtal Stadium, the home of 6th Division club SV Oberkirch, saw a brisk, offensive match from both sides in which everyone won. The proceeds from this Evonik-organized event went to a charity benefiting sick children based in Freiburg.

Daniel Gordon scored the only goal of the day.
An excellent field made for the best playing conditions. There was much play in front of both goals and goal chances for both side in the first half. Essen had two shots hit the BVB goal piping. The first one was from a deflected shot in the 5th minute and the second from a direct free kick in the 32nd minute. Borussia took the lead on a Daniel Gordon goal in the 20th minute. The youngster headed in a Hajnal corner kick.

Borussia lead corresponded with the flow of the match. BVB did need a good 15 minutes to show they had more class on the field, but they did create some early chances. Kovac had a header cleared off the Essen goal-line in the 3rd minute and a 15th minute Valdez header just missed the goal. Three minutes later, Hajnal hit the opponents´ crossbar with a direct free kick. On top of that, the Hungarian midfielder had a nice solo effort after being set-up by Valdez.

After halftime, the match clearly deflated, with the exception of Sadrijaj, who tried to storm the opposition´s goal by himself. There were very few notable scenes with the exception of a sparkling 88th minute save from Kruse, preventing a possible tying goal for Essen . "You could see my team was flat", Jürgen Klopp said after the match. "I am happy no one was injured", he continued. Looking forward to the German Cup match between the clubs on August 9th, the BVB coach said with a wink, "We have not shown our cards."
