0-1: Shock defeat at the Betzenberg -
Altintop dive hands win to Kaiserslautern

[13.11.] Borussia Dortmund remain in relegation trouble after losing 1-0 (0-0) to Kaiserslautern. Ferydom Zandi scored the winner from the spot in front of 37.417 fans at the Betzenberg Stadium. Particularly bitter for BVB: A dive by Halil Altintop won the home side the penalty.

The black ´n´ yellows already suffered their fifth defeat of the season against Kaiserslautern and slipped to 14th place in the Bundesliga. And Borussia struggled again offensively. Kringe wasted the visitors biggest chance shortly before the final whistle.

The Scenario:
16th-placed Kaiserslautern played host to 12th-ranked Borussia Dortmund. It was BVB´s 37th Bundesliga away game at Kaiserslautern. The head-to-head record: Six wins, 15 draws and 16 defeats. BVB, who had lost their last two matches on the road 1-0 to Bielefeld and Hannover (DFB Cup) respectively, were eager to make positive headlines again. Bert van Marwijk said: "I think my players know it´s high time."

The Players:
Things could hardly get any worse for BVB. Today coach Bert van Marwijk had to do without 12 players, including Addo, Evanilson, C. Metztelder, Gambino and Oliseh. Luckily, Rosicky, Ricken, Wörns and Madouni all declared themselves fit for this match. Patrick Kohlmann, 21, made his Bundesliga debut on the left of defence for the suspended Niclas Jensen.
Kaiserslautern was almost without any injury worries. Coach Kurt Jara only had to do without Ramzy, Nerlinger, Seitz and Lehmann. Former Borussia player Christian Timm also returned from long-term injury.

The Tactics:
Both teams operated with a 4-4-2 formation. BVB playmaker Tomas Rosicky was man-marked by Riedl, his counterpart Zandi by Sebastian Kehl. FCK coach Jara fielded two players, Kosowski and Engelhardt, on the left of midfield to keep Kringe at bay, leaving the right side uncovered for most of the time.

The Analysis:
As expected, it was a game between two teams that are currently battling against relegation. Both offered little creativity, few goalscoring opportunities, but a lot of misplaced passes and, to be fair, a lot of fighting spirit. BVB started aggressively, played solid in defence and offensively they tried to create some openings on the right flank - even though Kaiserlautern was better equipped on this side.

Only when Dede, Ewerthon and Rosicky tried their luck on the other flank, BVB posed something of a threat to the Kaiserslautern goal. But in the end the visitors only created one chance in the first half, a Rosicky free-kick on 28 minutes. The home team didn´t really sparkle up front, either. They worked hard, but seemed to have, like actually BVB, a lot of respect for their opponent. Jancker, who was denied on seven minutes by Weidenfeller, and Amanatidis, who went wide with a bicycle kick on 38 minutes, had the home side´s only chances in the first half.

Shortly before the interval Borussia suffered another injury blow: Kohlmann sustained an ankle injury and was replaced by 17-year-old Marc-André Kruska, another BVB player who made his Bundesliga debut this afternoon. Dede moved back to defence, Kruska filled the Brazilian´s position in midfield. After the break the match followed a similar pattern: Both teams lacked the final ball, and only created chances after individual errors.

Ahmed Madouni gave a committed performance on the right of defence, but the Frenchman visibly lacked the necessary match practice.
On 49 minutes, for example, Christian Wörns almost gifted Kaiserslautern the lead when he was dispossessed by Amanatidis, who was only denied by a last-ditch save from Weidenfeller. A few minutes later the Dortmund goalkeeper pulled off another superb save from an Amanatidis long-range effort.

Both teams seemed to settle for a draw, before Lutz Wagner fell for a blatant dive from second-half substitute Halil Altintop. The referee awarded Kaiserslautern a penalty, which was confidently converted by Ferydoom Zandi to hand Kaiserslautern a 1-0 win, and BVB their fifth away defeat of the season.

The Prospects:
Borussia Dortmund´s seven-day "road trip", with matches in Bielefeld, Hannover and Kaiserslautern, has come to an end. Next Saturday the black ´n´ yellows take on SC Freiburg at the Westfalen Stadium.
