Without Bender and Dede against KSC

[21.09.] Borussia Dortmund will not only be without Sebastian Kehl when they face Karlsruher SC on Tuesday night in the DFB Cup, they also have to do without Sven Bender (virus infection) and Dede (thigh injury). Mats Hummels and Felipe Santana are rated doubtful as well. That´s why coach Jürgen Klopp will take 20 players to Germany´s southwestern region of Baden and only announce his line-up on Tuesday.

It was literally a bitter pill to swallow for Sven Bender on Sunday. His fine debut against Hannover the 20-year-old marked a big step forward in his career and he looked certain to fill the holding role again for the injured Sebastian Kehl in the cup tie at Karlsruhe. But Jürgen Klopp is forced to find another solution for probably the most important position in the team. "Sven is sick. He´s out with a virus infection," the coach said on Monday, ruling him out for the Karlsruhe match. "The doc told him to stay away from the team."

Bender´s travel plans for the next couple of weeks are not only put in doubt due to this illness. "The trend is looking that way," said sports director Michael Zorc when asked if the club will deny him the release for the U20 World Cup that is held from 25 September to 16 October in Egypt. "Due to Sebastian Kehl´s injury the situation has changed for us," explained Klopp.

Borussia´s medical department is hopeful to get Bender fit for the weekend, in time for the Derby against Schalke. The same applies to Dede who suffered a minor thigh injury (small tear in the scar tissue of an older fibre rupture) in the 1-1 draw at Hannover. Since the muscle has not been affected directly, so Klopp, Dede could recover in time for Saturday´s match. But the German-Brazilian is definitively ruled out for Tuesday and will be replaced by Marcel Schmelzer.

BVB´s central defenders Felipe Santana and Mats Hummels are dealing with minor injuries. The Brazilian suffered a "dead leg" and wasn´t able to train properly on Monday. Hummels took a knock on the joint ankle against Hannover and has a painful bruise.

Klopp will only know after Tuesday´s (not public) training whether he will have the two players available. "Well, I can neither look into Felipe´s thigh nor Mats´ joint ankle..."
