1-4 - Three Stuttgart goals in last 13 minutes end BVBīs unbeaten run

[31.01.] Borussia Dortmundīs 12-game unbeaten run in the Bundesliga has come to an end as they lost 4-1 at VfB Stuttgart on Sunday night, their first defeat since 26 September 2009. The Black īnī Yellows, who stay fourth in the table, were the better side in the second half in which they scored the equaliser through Barrios, but conceded three goals in the closing minutes of the game.

In front of 42.000 fans at the sold-out "construction site" Mercedes-Benz-Arena, VfB took the lead in the 15th minute through a crazy goal which will be a highlight in every season review as Pogrebnyak and Santana were both named as scorers of the goal. But it was also a controversial goal. While the referee observer, Manfred Amarell, stated, "Ziegler was impeded by his own player," TV commentator Hansi Küpper said, "Ziegler was impeded inside the six yard box - it should have been called a foul."

The second half saw a lot of action. First Marica missed a penalty (48 mins.), then, seven minutes later, Barrios scored the equaliser for BVB. Kuzmanovic restored the lead for the home side with a free-kick in the 77th minute before Marica and Träsch added two more goals in the last four minutes. Not only did BVBīs unbeaten run come to an end, it was also their first defeat away from home since August 2009.

Scenario:
The thirteenth of the Bundesliga took on the fourth. With three wins (and a draw) under their new coach Christian Gross, VfB picked up more wins than under Markus Babbel in 15 matches and climbed to a secure mid-table position. BVB won nine of their last 12 games and thanks to this run shot up the table from 15th to fourth. Of their last four games in Stuttgart, BVB only had lost one.

Personnel matters:
While Stuttgart had their best team out apart from Delpierre (broken toe) and Cacau (groin problems), BVB had to do without a total of nine players. This week Bender added (inflammation of the knee capsule) his name to the BVB injury list that already included Weidenfeller, Kehl, Zidan, Tinga, Feulner, Rangelov and Öztekin. Focher replaced Höttecke as reserve goalkeeper on the bench and Santana took the place of Bender in the starting line-up.

Tactics:
BVB coach Jürgen Klopp didnīt make any changes to the system (4-2-3-1), but a few to the team: Santana joined Subobic in central defence and Hummels moved up to midfield to play alongside Sahin in a holding role. Stuttgart played with a 4-4-2 formation with two offensive wingers (Hleb, Hilpert) which were marked by Owomoyela and Schmelzer. BVB pressed early, always tackled the player in possession of the ball and put in another fantastic committed performance. Grosskreutz started on the left, but switched sides with Le Tallec who came on for the injured Kuba early in the game.

Game & Analysis:
BVB started the game in their usual fashion: defending in depth and springing on the break. Stuttgart had the brighter start and built some pressure early on. But it was still the visitors who had the first chance of the game. After a Sahin free-kick, Stuttgartīs central defender Niedermeier and goalkeeper Lehmann impeded each other, but Subotic failed to put the loose ball home from 10 yards (8).

While Stuttgart became more threatening, BVB struggled to get into their stride. In the 11th minute Ziegler rushed out of his box to clear from a Stuttgart player, but four minutes later the BVB keeper was powerless to prevent the goal. After BVB gave the ball away easily in midfield, Molinaro broke down the left and crossed into the area where Schmelzer and Ziegler were able to prevent Marica from scoring, but Pogrebnyak and Santana somehow poked the ball over the line - 1-0 for Stuttgart after 15 minutes. Not even TV replays could determine whether the Stuttgart striker or the Dortmund defender squeezed the ball into the net. The goal, by the way, could also have been disallowed as the goalkeeper was clearly impeded.

At this stage of the game BVB proved a sporadic threat, but when they did, they created clear-cut chances. In the 20th minute Owomoyela went close with a header from a Sahin free-kick and four minutes later a Valdez shot missed just wide. Overall, however, they struggled to cause the Stuttgart defence problems and often gave the ball away in midfield.

The game then saw long periods of inactivity and it was BVB who increased the tempo shortly before half-time. After some fine passing play, Owomoyela crossed into the area where Grosskreutz just missed the ball. And a BVB equaliser would not have been undeserved at this stage as Stuttgart sat back a bit after taking the lead.

…and Lucas Barrios finished it to make it 1-1.
On a side note: Borussia were the only team in the Bundesliga that had scored in every away game this season. But they also had never come back from a goal behind in Stuttgart who themselves had won five of seven games this season after taking the lead.

The second half also started with a difficult call for the referee: Owomoyela made a slide tackle in the area on Marica and Gagelmann pointed to the spot. Marica stepped up himself, but only hit the crossbar (48).

And the action continued: before Hummels made a fantastic through pass to Grosskreutz, the Stuttgart fans had shouted for a foul and the VfB defence hesitated a moment. Grosskreutz ran clear but didnīt seem to have the courage to go around Lehman. Instead he passed the ball to the unmarked Barrios who from 16 yards fired an unstoppable shot past a Stuttgart defender who was standing on the line. It was the 10th goal this season for the "Panther" and it gave BVB a deserved equaliser after 55 minutes.

Borussia had a 9-3 shots on goal advantage midway through the second half and didnīt make as many mistakes as in the first half. They looked to have the game under control and in the 70th minute Valdez even had a chance to put BVB in front, but he was denied by Lehmann. At this stage, all the noise in the stadium came from the BVB supporters.

Stuttgart regained the lead in the 77th minute when a Pogrebnyak a solo run past three BVB defenders was ended by a foul by Schmelzer at the edge of the area. BVB formed a nine-man wall, but Kuzmanovic still managed to find a way through it to put hosts 2-1 up. Shortly after Marica hit the crossbar with a header (81), then Ziegler made a great save (83).

At the other end Valdez had a chance from a promising position, but was again denied by Lehmann (83). In the 85th minute BVB coach Jürgen Klopp then threw on two attacking players to try and snatch the equaliser, but it was to no avail. Marica seized on a misunderstanding between Sahin and Schmelzer to put Stuttgart 3-1 up in the 86th minute and Träsch added a fourth to make it 4-1 (89), a scoreline that didnīt reflect the game at all.

Prospects:
Next Sunday (KO 1730 CET) Borussia Dortmund take on Eintracht Frankfurt at the Signal Iduna Park. Tickets are available in all areas of the ground and can be purchased online.
