1-1 in Hannover - Nuri Sahin scores the lone goal for a superior BVB side

[19.09.] Borussia Dortmund are struggling to make headway in the Bundesliga. They still earned a respectable 1-1 (1-0) draw at Hannover 96, in a game they dominated for long spells and in which they created the better chances.

Johannes Vorspohl reporting from Hannover

Borussia Dortmund had more chances in the first half in front of 43.754 fans at the AWD-Arena and took the lead shortly before the half-time whistle through Sahin (45 mins.). Ya Konan scored for Hannover straight after the interval with a wonder goal to make it 1-1 which was also the final result.

Scenario:
Hannover 96 and Borussia Dortmund both had registered only one win from the first five games and were level on points in the Bundesliga on 11th and 14th place, respectively, separated only by the goal difference. Hannoverīs form was improving as they held Werder Bremen to a 0-0 last week. Borussia Dortmund reacted to their tough opening schedule with a short training camp in Marienfeld to boost their confidence.

Made his Bundesliga debut: Sven Bender.
Personnel matters:
With the exception of skipper Sebastian Kehl, Jürgen Klopp had all players available for selection. The BVB coach made three changes to the side that lost against Bayern Munich last week . Rangelov, Kuba and Santana were replaced in the starting line-up by Valdez, Hajnal and Bender. 96 coach Andreas Bergmann had plenty of selection worries. Besides Germany goalkeeper Enke he had to do without Andreasen, Schlaudraff, Lala, Vinicius, Hanke, Pinto, Eggimann and Forssell.

Tactics:
Jürgen Klopp also made a couple of tactical changes, returning to the 4-4-2 diamond formation. Bender, in his Bundesliga debut, played in the holding midfielder role, Sahin and Tinga as wingers and Hajnal returned to his position behind the strikers in a creative role. Hummels played alongside Subotic in the central defence. Hannover 96 also opted for a 4-4-2 with Bruggink pulling the strings for the Lower Saxons.

Put in a good performance before his substitution: Dede.
Game & Analysis:
Both teams started the game well, though Borussia Dortmund looked more purposeful. The Black īnī Yellows were compact in defence and they tried to play and move the ball quickly, and they created two good chances in the opening 12 minutes through Sahin (8) and Hajnal (12).

BVB gradually took control, dominated possession and put the hosts under pressure. And they almost capitalised on an error by the Hannover defence, but Valdez and Tinga impeded each other and the chance slipped away (22). Inside a minute Hajnal, after good work from Zidan, had a shot on goal from a promising position, but was denied by 96 keeper Fromlowitz (23). Hannover had their first opportunity after 25 minutes when Brugging tried his luck with a long-range effort.

Midway through the first half the game lost its flow a bit. And in the 34th minute Borussia also suffered a blow when Dede hobbled off injured. Schmelzer replaced the Brazilian in the back four. Shortly before the break Sahin then gave the almost 7.000 travelling BVB fans something to cheer about. After picking up a long ball from Owomoyela, the BVB midfielder coolly dinked the ball over Fromlowitz and into the goal to give BVB a well-deserved lead (45).

Put BVB in front: Nuri Sahin.
Before the start of the second half the BVB players, in a demonstration of unity, formed a circle at the halfway line to fire themselves up. But it was to no avail as less then three minutes later Ya Konan picked up a throw in and fired home into the top corner to make it 1-1 - a wonder goal (48).

Most of the action now took place between the two penalty areas. Borussia tried hard, but struggled to get a grip on the game and create any meaningful chances. The hosts also struggled offensively as the BVB defence stood solid. Hannoverīs only chance at this stage of the game came from a corner, but a header from Schulz went well wide of the target (60).

Jürgen Klopp brought on Kubu in the 65th minute to inject some life into his side. Both teams intensified their attacking efforts and the pace of the game finally picked up again. And there were chances again. After a free-kick from Hajnal, a Hummelsīs deflection went straight into the arms of Fromlowitz (69). A few minutes later, at the other end, it was Weidenfeller who rescued his team when he made a stunning reflex stop to deny Ya Konan. Kuba had another chance for BVB, but he poked the ball a bit too far ahead of him and allowed Fromlowitz to snatch it away from him.

Shortly before the final whistle both sides had another opportunity to score the winner. First Weidenfeller pulled off a great save from Rosenthal (87), then a deflected shot from Barrios went just wide (89).

Prospects:
Next Tuesday (22 September, kick-off 2030 CET) Borussia Dortmund travel to Karlsruhe for a DFB Cup second-round tie. Four days later, on Saturday 26 September (kick off 1530 CET), Schalke 04 are coming to the SIGNAL IDUNA PARK for the much anticipated "Derby".
