Head coach Mike Tullberg has had a week to get to know his more or less entirely new Black & Yellow U23 squad. This Friday, his young side played their second pre-season friendly match before departing this weekend for training camp in the Kitzbühel Alps. BVB went head-to-head with the top amateur side in Dortmund, ASC 09, with the two sides playing out a 1-1 draw over a highly demanding 90 minutes.

Leon Burggraf got his name on the scoresheet for the Black & Yellows, finding the back of the net in the 20th minute after being set up by Gianluca Rizzo. The equaliser wasn't conceded until the 90th minute, with Lars Waschewski firing home for the hosts.

For Mike Tullberg, the most important aspect of the day wasn't the result; what really mattered was the continued development of his players: ''I thought we looked a bit tired out there today. You could tell we'd just come off the back of a hard week of training. We were very slow in the first half, but that's no criticism of the boys. In the second half we were able to move the ball around a lot better, we really should have scored four or five goals in the end. But unfortunately we also gave the ball away too easily far too many times, which is something I'm not happy about. At the end of the day, everyone got the opportunity to show what they're capable of, and that's exactly what they did.''

Next stop: training camp in Austria

After the final whistle, defender Marco Rente didn't seem particularly disappointed, though perhaps he was too exhausted to express it after an intense 45 minutes played under the scorching sun: ''I've come away from this week with a really good impression. Obviously we all have to get to know each other as there are a lot of new players in the squad. Despite that, we played really well both today and on Wednesday. We've had a lot of training sessions, so it makes sense that the legs are feeling a bit heavy just now. Overall I think it's fair to say that the week went well.''

The next friendly match is lined up in a week's time, with BVB facing Austria Salzburg as part of their programme at training camp. The squad will then leave Austria on 7 July.
