This is the ninth time that the stadium on Strobelallee has hosted a European semi-final. Only once before have BVB left the pitch as losers. And the record against clubs from France in knockout ties is also positive, with four wins and two defeats.

Previous encounters

Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain are going head-to-head for the seventh time in European competition. BVB's record in games thus far: one win, three draws and two defeats. This includes a 2-0 loss on the first matchday of the current campaign at the Parc des Princes, with goals from Kylian Mbappé (49, penalty) and Achraf Hakimi (58), not to forget a 1-1 draw in Dortmund at the end of the group stage. Karim Adeyemi scored in the 51st minute to make it 1-0, before PSG's Warren Zaire-Emery equalised five minutes later.

Both matches in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League group stage ended in a draw: First came a 1-1 draw in Dortmund (Nuri Sahin scored from the penalty spot) and then the two sides played out a goalless draw in Paris. In the last 16 of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League, BVB won the first leg 2-1 thanks to two goals from Erling Haaland, with Neymar netting for PSG. The second leg in Paris - the first "ghost game" in Borussia Dortmund history due to the outbreak of the pandemic - ended 2-0 in favour of PSG (goals by Neymar and Juan Bernat).

BVB facts

This is the ninth time Borussia Dortmund have reached a European semi-final and the sixth time they have played the first leg at Strobelallee. This need not be a disadvantage. Borussia Dortmund have reached the final four times, and only once, in 1964 against Inter Milan, have they lost the second leg away from home.

The home record in European semi-finals is five wins, two draws and one defeat (1995 against Juventus).

The overall record against French teams in knock-out ties is positive: BVB have made it through to the next round on four occasions (against Auxerre in 1993 and 1997, Bordeaux in 1964 and Lille in 2002) and failed twice: against Sochaux in the UEFA Cup 2003 and PSG in the Champions League in 2020.

The Black & Yellows remained undefeated in their first six matches at home to French clubs (three wins, three draws). The overall record in Dortmund now reads as follows: six wins, four draws and two defeats.

PSG facts

PSG have reached the semi-finals of Europe's most prestigious club competition on three occasions, progressing to the final once (2020).

Four of their five semi-finals in the UEFA Champions League have ended in defeat. The only success was a 3-0 win against Leipzig in Lisbon in August 2020 (there were no two-legged ties as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic).

The 25-year gap between semi-final appearances in 1995 and 2020 is a Champions League record, surpassing Ajax's 22-year absence between 1997 and 2019.

This is PSG's sixth time in a European semi-final. The club has reached the final three times and been knocked out three times.

Of their seven most recent appearances in Germany, the French side have only won one (in Munich over three years ago), drawing two and losing four.

PSG have won four of their six knockout matches (excluding finals) against German clubs, losing only once: to Bayern Munich in the Round of 16 last season. PSG have progressed against BVB (2020), Leipzig (2020), Wolfsburg (2009), Leverkusen (2014) and Bayern (2021).
