BVB to open Bundesliga campaign at home to Mainz
Borussia Dortmund will kick off the 54th season of the German Bundesliga at home to 1. FSV Mainz 05 on the weekend of 27/28 August. As the first matchday is directly followed by an international break, the first away game will take place on the second weekend in September. BVB will travel to Leipzig on the 9, 10 or 11 September.
Due to the Olympic Games in Rio and the resulting late start to the Bundesliga season, the last fixture in the first half of the season will not be played until after the winter break. Before Christmas, Matchdays 15 and 16 will be played in the space of a week between 16 and 21 December. The 2016/17 season ends on 20 May 2017 with a home game against Werder Bremen.
"Starting the season against Mainz, a very well-organised and experienced team, is a real challenge! Then we travel away to Leipzig for their home debut in the Bundesliga. That will definitely be an extraordinary atmosphere - we're looking forward to it," said head coach Thomas Tuchel. Sporting Director Michael Zorc added: "We don't get any say when it comes to organising the fixture list - with that in mind, we take what we are given and are satisfied with our opening fixtures of the 2016/17 season."
The first matches against Schalke 04 and Bayern Munich take place in Dortmund, on Matchdays 9 and 11 respectively.
The first few Bundesliga fixtures are set to be scheduled precisely in the 28th calendar week (11-15 July). (br)
