Promoted by the United Nations since 1992, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities aims to raise awareness for the needs of people with disabilities worldwide on 3 December every year and to promote commitment to their dignity and rights. The latter is also an important matter for the BVB foundation "leuchte auf".

"We create participation on equal terms" - this is one of the guiding principles that the foundation uses to organise the content of its own work. It also supports projects that focus on inclusion. Examples of this include the cooperation with the Sit'n'Skate project and the close collaboration with the Special Olympics NRW that has been in place for several years – in order to also make it possible for children with disabilities to be a mascot at a BVB home game.
