“My team fought hard, and were rewarded for it with three points. We were lucky to win, but it was not undeserved as we didn’t allow them any clear-cut chances,” said Jürgen Klopp, summing up Sunday’s Bundesliga clash.
Herr Klopp, what is your verdict on the game?
I can understand that people rooting for Freiburg are disappointed. It was a tough match for different reasons. We all had our share of problems today. We already had to cope with them during the week as we only had four players in training. Then you come here, the sun is shining - what most people were happy about - but this change in weather is tough. And then we face a highly motivated team that is battling against relegation and that can play some decent football. We were really made to work hard.
Your team really had to work hard, didn’t they?
They showed great will, but a bad timing. Fortunately, the entire back line did a great job and held firm. We stayed in the game and won it through a shot from Sebastian Kehl about which I will ask him whether it was a deliberate effort or not. In the closing stages we had some chances on the break, and had we taken them it would have been over much sooner. Freiburg produced a good display and pushed us to the limits.
Was it a deserved win?
My team fought hard, and were rewarded for it with three points. We were lucky to win, but it was not undeserved as we didn’t allow them any clear-cut chances.
What’s your comment on the Sokratis incident that sparked calls for a red card from the Freiburg players?
I’ve seen the incident now a couple of times on television. It was a foul, it was a free-kick even if he didn’t touch him – fortunately he didn’t touch him. Zulechner tapped the ball too far ahead of himself, so it wasn’t a clear-cut chance. And that’s why I think it was a yellow card.
You also went to the Freiburg players after the game. Why?
I have sympathy for Freiburg, and above all I have sympathy for football players who give their all. I can understand that they are disappointed. I didn’t comfort them but wished them luck for the next games.
