Former BVB player Horst Trimhold has passed away in Hanau, several weeks after his 80th birthday. Trimhold played for BVB between 1966 and 1971.

Born on 4 February 1941 in Essen, Trimhold was only 18 years old when he helped his hometown club ETB Schwarz-Weiß Essen win the DFB Cup in 1959. Following the inception of the Bundesliga, the elegant midfielder completed a switch to Eintracht Frankfurt in 1963, before returning to the Ruhr region three years later to join the newly crowned European Cup Winners' Cup winners Borussia Dortmund.

Trimhold, who was part of the extended Germany squad for the 1966 World Cup in England, played 106 times for Borussia Dortmund, scoring 16 goals. He left in 1971 – a year before the club was relegated – to return to Frankfurt; this time he joined city rivals FSV Frankfurt, for whom he also made 106 competitive appearances and acquired legendary status. As FSV's honorary captain, he helped the club win the German Amateur Championship in 1972 and then return to the second tier three years later.

He forged friendships everywhere he went and his infectious personality made him universally popular – despite his tendency to save money at every opportunity, which back in his Essen days earned him his lifelong nickname "Scot".
