BVB played well, dominated the opposition for large parts of the game but still missed out on the three points against Mainz. Jürgen Klopp rued his side’s poor finishing, and was also unhappy with the defending at the goals BVB lost.

Jürgen Klopp: “We could have been worthy winners if we had taken our chances. Instead, we defended poorly twice and were deserved losers. It was a normal game for us and we had a lot of good moments. We started very well but then took our feet off the gas. But if you concede two goals in the second half, you deserve to lose. We were too passive for the first goal and didn’t defend good enough overall. Adrian also could have taken one of his chances, but it was not to be. In a game like this you need those things to go for you. You could see how much the opening goal lifted the spirits of Mainz, let alone their second goal and our missed penalty. It all went wrong for us, and that’s why we ended up deserved losers. I didn’t assign anyone to take the penalty. Ciro grabbed the ball and then failed to put it away. It happens in football.”

Matthias Ginter: “We had one or two chances and were the better side in the first half. Mainz were on top in the second half and got their goals at the right times. With the own goal, all I knew was that I had a player behind me and that if I didn’t get to the ball he would score.”

Erik Durm: “We played well for the first 20 to 30 minutes. We attacked well, covered a lot of ground and created some good chances. But we need to be more clinical in front of goal. We shouldn’t have conceded the goals we did. We are very disappointed because we wanted to win today.”

Jonas Hofmann (BVB player on loan to Mainz): “It’s a day to celebrate as we could never have expected this win. It was a great team performance and I think everyone saw what’s possible when you work together as a team. The missed penalty gave us another lift. We defended very well. Dortmund didn’t have that many chances to score. Maybe we got a bit lucky towards the end as Dortmund were pressuring but in the end it’s goals that count.”

Kasper Hjulmand (Mainz coach): “I think we did very well in defence today. Dortmund’s transition football is the best in Europe. Our entire team defended very well. I’m delighted about these points. The team fought and played superbly. You need to work together as a team if you want to beat such a big opponent. We wanted to sit deep and close up the space to prevent Dortmund from having too many opportunities for their transition play. We are very happy about this victory. It’s a memorable evening for Mainz 05.”
