When Neven Subotic damaged his cruciate ligaments in last season’s Bundesliga game at VfL Wolfsburg on 9 November 2013, it was a moment that rocked Borussia Dortmund. BVB total! followed the BVB centre-back for 63 days during his injury rehab in Dortmund, in the training camps, in the USA and in Ethiopia. The result is a unique documentary that celebrated its premiere in Dortmund on Sunday.

“I was really touched, it’s a great film,“ said main protagonist Neven Subotic after the premiere. Despite being heavily involved (both in front and behind the camera), it was the first time Subotic saw the entire film. “Neven was very enthusiastic. He always added his personal touch and wanted to be involved in everything,” said Danny Fritz, the author and director of the documentary.

“Neven – The Story of a Comeback” (original title: “Neven – Geschichte eines Comebacks“) premiered at the Dortmund “U” cinema on Sunday night in front of a 150-strong audience, including BVB coach Jürgen Klopp who said, “It’s a great film that captivated me from beginning to end. As I said in it, the injury chose the right one. You can use the time as a chance to mature as a person, and Neven took that chance. Let’s not forget, the lad’s only 25 years old. Watching the film and seeing all the kind of things Neven is involved in, paired with his view on life, one could think he’s already in his mid-thirties. This is 100 percent Neven Subotic.”

The documentary will be available to watch online exclusively for members from 6 pm CET on Monday at www.bvbtotal.de. It is 65 minutes long, was edited by Uli Nowitzky, with the trailer and the title design created by Sebastian Landeskroener. Also featuring in the documentary are (in alphabetical order): Zlatan Alomerovic, Jakub Blaszczykowski, Bernd Bohmann, Klaus Eder, Chang Lee, Ivica Olic, Sam Peine, Jürgen Klopp, Dr. Andreas Schlumberger, Natalija Subotic, Svetlana Subotic, Zeljko Subotic.
