The German Olympic National Team lost the final against Brazil after 120 dramatic minutes and they were unlucky to lose in the penalty shoot-out by 5-6 (0-1, 1-1). Borussia Dortmund's Sven Bender was unlucky when he hit the crossbar with a good shot in the sold out Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil were in control of the game, but Germany had the better chances for long spells during the game. They hit the woodwork on three occasions in the first half. Twice Sven Bender was involved, who played the first pass for Julian Brandt's chance and he hit the woodwork himself after half an hour.

Whilst Sven Bender gave a terrific performance full of fighting spirit in defensive midfield, Matthias Ginter was was once again outstanding in the centre of defense. He took the first penalty for Germany in the penalty shoot-out and scored! It was unlucky that Nils Petersen was the only German not to convert his penalty. Neymar scored for Brazil with the last penalty of the game and secured the gold medal for Brazil. (br)
