The long journey to Baku proved worthwhile for André Schürrle. Making his first start for the German national team since October 2015, the Black and Yellow striker scored twice and got an assist as the world champions recorded a 4-1 World Cup qualifying win over Azerbaijan.

Schürrle bookended the victory with Germany's first and fourth goals of the night, and set up Bayern's Thomas Müller for the visitors' second. Wolfsburg's Mario Gomez was also on target.

At the Tofik Bakhramov Stadium – named after the linesman who awarded the 'Wembley goal' against Dortmund's Hans Tilkowski in the 1966 World Cup final – Schürrle opened the scoring from five metres out in the 19th minute before rounding off the victory by converting a Jonas Hector cross from the penalty spot in the 81st minute.
