On the fifth day of preseason, BVB chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke and coach Jürgen Klopp took questions from the press. They talked about the club’s goals for the season and players in waiting.

Hans-Joachim Watzke on the goals for the season:
Like last year, we want to secure automatic qualification for the Champions League. In the Bundesliga we shouldn’t just look at the duel with Bayern, but also at the teams behind us, the work clubs from Wolfsburg and Leverkusen as well as Schalke. We want to survive the group stage of the Champions League and we want to go as far as possible in the DFB Cup, ideally to the final again.

Jürgen Klopp on the difference between the Euro 2012 year and the 2014 World Cup year:
We won the double two years ago. Some of the players then went on holiday, the others to the European Championships. Many of them came back disappointed as they had been knocked out early or had not played. And they only had two weeks of holiday. Preseason is all about preparing for a long season with many games. We must ensure than we get all the lads to the same level. Two strikers will return on 18 July, for the second training camp we will have all our players back except for the German internationals. That’s going to be a crucial time. We played well for two years but not as well as we wanted.

… on the goals for the season:
I always want to achieve the maximum possible, but we also need to be a bit realistic. Going through life dreaming doesn't really help as you will eventually hit a wall. We feel week in and week out how close the matches are. We are all fired up, but we also know our capabilities. We lost a top player in each of the last four years, and we want to be absolutely competitive again. We will try to concede fewer goals; 38 goals was the second best total, but still too many.

… on Ilkay Gündogan:
He is back. That’s the best news. Everything else is of no concern to me right now. He hasn’t felt this good for months. We have learned not to pressure him and we are looking forward to the day he is available to us again.

… on Neven Subotic and Jakub Blaszczykowski:
Neven’s been training normally with the team. We watch him and give him a rest when needed. But at the moment he doesn’t look like he might need or want a rest. He has worked meticulously for eight months and is in great shape. Kuba is also the road to recovery, although his injury only dates back five months. He still needs to build up muscle mass, and we don’t want to force anything. He will have taken another step forward in time for the second training camp, and he should be fit again for the first competitive match.
