Following the draw against TSG, both Mats Hummels and Sebastian Kehl are certain that the fight for Europa League qualification is still firmly in their own hands. "I firmly believe that we can still do it on our own merits," said Kehl, while Hummels added: "I'm completely convinced that it's still in our own hands." Here is the double interview with BVB's former and current captains.

Hummels celebrates his equaliser with passion

What's your view on the match?
Mats Hummels: "There is a slight element of dissatisfaction there because we spurned a few very good chances in the closing stages. We had two or three wonderful opportunities. Obviously Hoffenheim had chances too, especially at the beginning of the first and second periods. All in all, I think that a draw is possibly a fair result, but if we'd scored a winner then I don't think that would've been entirely undeserved."

Sebastian Kehl: "Hoffenheim will probably say that it was a deserved share of the spoils. But I think we still had chances to win the match. Overall, it was a very, very intense match at the end of an intense week."

Mats, you got the all-important equaliser. How did you see the situation before your header?
Mats Hummels: "It was a robust challenge coming from both sides. In Adam Szalai, I was facing an opponent who makes use of his body - and one who knows how to use it too. I just tried to hold strong. Of course there's an element of luck involved in the ball flying over his head and then landing squarely on mine."

"It was end to end"

It was a very open match in the second period…
Sebastian Kehl: "It was end to end, a really high tempo game. Both teams threw absolutely everything forward. Unfortunately, we weren't able to take our chances at the end."

After the 120 minutes in Munich, where did you get the energy from to pour forward with such vigour?

Mats Hummels: "After such a strenuous week with more than one game, it's often the case that you're a bit heavy-legged at the outset but then you get a sort of "second wind". That's a phenomenon that a lot of teams are familiar with. You start to feel a certain lightness. We also had the space at our disposal too, without it you can't play like that."

Which positives can you take from this match?
Sebastian Kehl: "We did a lot of things well and showed a real presence. We need to work on converting our chances and win our two remaining home matches. That's our aim. Then we might still have a chance of qualifying for the Europa League through the Bundesliga."

Mats Hummels: "It's certainly important that we were able to create chances. In many other games this season, that hasn't been the case. It's great that I scored and that we got a point from the game. But in hindsight we're all disappointed about the two points we dropped."

"We can still do it on our own merits"

Do you think you'll make seventh?
Mats Hummels: "Unfortunately, we've missed the chance to set ourselves up with a better starting position in the table for the last few weeks. I hope we won't be missing those points at the end. But I'm convinced that it's still in our own hands."

Sebastian Kehl: "Well it's a shame that we couldn't take a big step forward. But the gap remains the same. I firmly believe that we can still do it on our own merits." (djg)
