When Jürgen Klopp stood up to leave the press conference at 22:53 CET, several media representatives even applauded the outgoing BVB boss. It was clearly their way of saying thank you for their cooperation - and for Klopp's work. Here are the BVB coach's comments at his last official press conference.

Jürgen Klopp on…

…the final in general: "Congratulations to VfL on a great success in a worthy final. Both teams really gave it a good go. We scored an excellent goal to make it 1-0, then had an excellent chance to double our lead. After that we conceded three goals in the space of 16 minutes - all different in nature and all unnecessary."

…the individual goals conceded: "Naldo's free-kick was difficult to hold on to. For the second goal, we cleared the ball two or three times, but didn't get it away completely. Then Kevin De Bruyne hit the ball through Mats Hummels' legs and into the corner. And Wolfsburg are always dangerous from crosses, which is how they got the third."

…BVB's chances: "We could've made it 3-2 before half-time. Although I've amassed some experience at coming to terms with defeats, I'm by no means an expert. What I mean here is that Aubameyang should've had a penalty. After half-time we had a great chance through Shinji. We performed well, our opponents defended, and ultimately we just couldn't manage to get a second goal."

…the closing stages: "Wolfsburg became more sure of themselves as the game progressed. The last ten minutes weren't exactly incident-free, but they were full of goal-kicks. We finished second. It doesn't quite feel as good as at the Olympic Games..."

…the Jürgen Klopp chants after the match: "Unfortunately, they were no consolation for me. On the one hand it was a beautiful gesture, but at such a moment nothing can console you. It takes longer than a second to come to terms with this defeat. If you really have your heart set on something and then don't achieve it, you need some time."

…the goalkeeping performance: "The goalkeeping performance was not the reason we lost. Naldo has a shot like a bullet, you can't hold on to the ball. That means the defenders need to react more quickly and stop the opposition getting to the ball. Mitch made an outstanding save directly after we went ahead. Diego Benaglio simply saved what he had to."

"The pain of leaving is slowly sinking in"

…his departure: "The pain of leaving is slowly sinking in, it really hurts. I've just tried to express my thanks to each of my players because it has been an extraordinary pleasure and a huge honour to be able to work with them. It's difficult for me to let go."

…the consequences of the defeat: "Now there'll be no Cup celebrations, but a farewell party instead. If there's a positive, then it's that we haven't set the bar too high for next season. Unfortunately, the lads will have to start the season early due to Europa League qualification. I'd have liked to avoid that."

…the Black and Yellow evening at the Kraftwerk event venue in Berlin: "You need to celebrate saying goodbye. I'll be there in any case, I don't just want to disappear. But I can't blame anyone for not going. It'll certainly be a bit different compared to if we'd won the Cup."

"With his quality, Marco will win more titles"

…Marco Reus, who missed the chance to make it 2-0: "With his quality, Marco will definitely win more titles. You can't put this defeat down to that one moment anyway. There's no guarantee that we wouldn't have conceded three goals after going 2-0 up."

…the half-time team talk: "At the break, I 100% felt that we could cause a spectacle and turn the game around again. I didn't feel unsettled for a second. I was sure that we'd create five or six chances to score. Being 3-1 down is not exactly a dream scoreline at half-time. But I think that we performed well in the second period."

…the potential fear of a large feeling of emptiness: "I've never felt emptiness. On the contrary, sometimes there's too much going on in my head." (fu)
