Five goals to start pre-season. 34 days after their DFB Cup final appearance, Borussia Dortmund kicked off their preparations for the coming season with a 5-0 (3-0) victory over regional league side VfL Rhede. At a sold-out stadium BVB raced into a 3-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes thanks to goals from Gündogan, Mkhitaryan and Ioannidis, hit the woodwork three times in total and scored twice more through Stenzel and Maruoka.

Coach Thomas Tuchel fielded two completely different teams in each half of the encounter. However, a whole host of BVB players were unavailable with Aubameyang, Kagawa and Sokratis still on holiday following their international commitments, while Immobile missed out due to the birth of his second child. Further absentees included U-21 European Championship participants Leitner, Jojic and Ginter as well as the injured Sahin, Großkreutz, Ramos, Hofmann and Ducksch. Reus was also left out due to his own individual intensity programme.

In sunny temperatures of 45 degrees, Tuchel called out instructions for improvement from the sidelines despite BVB's smart forward play at the outset. Ioannidis hit the bar with a diving header in the sixth minute and then steered the ball into the net four minutes later, only for the first goal of the Tuchel era to be ruled out for offside.

In the twelfth minute Sarr stopped one of the few attacks by the men from West Münster and immediately played the ball forward to Kuba, who steered the ball into the path of Gündogan to open the scoring with a chip. Shortly afterwards Mkhitaryan went clean through and doubled BVB's lead after playing a one-two with Kuba. Ioannidis netted 120 seconds later from a rebound to score a third.

Gündogan struck the crossbar with a free-kick from 17 metres out as a further flurry of chances fell BVB's way (25), most of which were thwarted in style by Rhede shot-stopper Tebrock. But with the high temperatures and the training exertions from the past few days taking their toll, the visitors understandably slowed the tempo after the half-hour mark.

Tuchel completely overhauled his side at the interval while keeping the same tactical formation in place. BVB operated with a 4-1-4-1 basic formation with Gündogan and Mkhitaryan featuring in the first period and Castro and Stenzel in the second. The first chance in the second half fell to Castro, who became the third BVB player of the day to hit the woodwork (50). Shortly afterwards he squared the ball to Stenzel, who tapped in a fourth (51).

Kampl, who was operating as a lone frontman, was denied twice in close succession by the exceptional keeper (50/51) before hitting the side netting after outmanoeuvring all of his opponents (66). Maruoka then converted one of the Black and Yellows' many chances to round off a 5-0 win.
