For the first time since 1968 the two “Borussias” are facing each other on the opening game of the season – 47 years ago BVB lost at home 3-1. However, that is the only bad omen before the sold-out match at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday evening. Here are the key match facts.

Dortmund are on great form at home!

  • Borussia Dortmund have only lost one of their last 14 games at home against Mönchengladbach, the last being a 2-1 defeat in the 2013/14 season.
  • Apart from that, eight of the last nine home games were victories for BVB.
  • BVB have managed to score in each of their last 23 home games against Gladbach. Their last goalless match was a 0-0 stalemate in August 1988.
  • Mönchengladbach have only picked up four points and scored eight goals in their last 13 visits to Signal Iduna Park.

Lots of goals and plenty of action

  • In the last 36 meetings between the two clubs both have managed to score. The last 0-0 match was 17. April 1994 at the Bökelberg stadium.
  • BVB have not come from 1-0 behind to win against any club more often than they have against Mönchengladbach – 8 times! Dortmund has only managed to equal this against Frankfurt.
  • Gladbach has gone ahead 1-0 21 times in total but has thrown the lead away each time and ended up with 8 defeats and 13 draws.
  • Gladbach achieved their biggest victory against BVB in 1978 – a 12-0 thrashing. However, they did also suffer their first Bundesliga defeat to BVB on the 5th match day in the 1965/66 season which ended 5-4.

Amicable yet tied

  • The clubs’ head to head record is identical with both teams winning 29 times and drawing 28 times.
  • BVB has not drawn against any other team more than they have against Mönchengladbach. (28 times, matching their record against Bayern Munich and Hamburg)
  • This statistic is the same for Gladbach who have drawn against Stuttgart and Bayern Munich 28 times.
