Speaking in an interview after the match against FC Bayern, Mats Hummels said that although people might think him crazy for saying it, BVB "didn't put in a bad performance". Nevertheless, the Black and Yellows' captain believed Bayern's third goal determined the outcome of the match.

Mats, what's your take on the match?
We can definitely take positives from the first half. In the first 45 minutes we put in a good performance, I think it's fair to say that. We only gave away a few chances, but unfortunately Bayern converted the two we gave them. They were clinical today, you could see that from their third goal. That was a killer for us. Up until that point the match had been very balanced, played at a high level. It was worthy of a big match! The goal that came directly after the restart destabilised us somewhat. Then Bayern's fourth goal came from a situation when we were not attacking high up at any point, but each defender was always five metres away from his man. Bayern are obviously a great team, who really take advantage of such weaknesses.

Did Bayern surprise you with the long balls they played leading up to the first and third goals?
No, that's the worst thing. Our tactics were completely clear: not to let Boateng and Alaba have time on the ball; to stop these long balls. I don't know why that didn't work in both cases, and why Jerome Boateng was under no pressure. Our defensive line was quite high. But in theory, our objective was to combine a high line with pressing our opponents early. If your opponent is under no pressure, that can be fatal. And in both cases, Bayern were clinical after those two sensational passes.

Bayern's third came immediately after the restart, when you really felt you could get back into the game. Do you think it played a role that there were only 66 hours between the final whistle in Saloniki and kick-off in Munich?

I don't think so. It was a real blow - but that kind of thing can also happen if you've just had a week off. We had already reduced the deficit from two goals to one. Then we conceded that goal so early on in the second half. For me that determined the outcome of the match.

Is it a small consolation that Wolfsburg, Schalke and Leverkusen also dropped points on matchday 8?
We have dropped points on three consecutive matchdays now. That's really annoying. We're focusing on ourselves. You can accept losing a match in Munich. But it hurts to lose after conceding five. When I say what I'm about to say, everyone will say: "Is he out of his mind?". But I don't think we put in a bad performance today. There have been no other teams this season that have caused danger in front of Bayern's goal so often. We just weren't clinical enough and now we need to make sure that we get back to winning ways. We need to bounce back against Mainz on the Friday after the international break.
