Marco Reus was involved in many dangerous situations in the game against Mainz and scored the important opener in the 2-0 victory for BVB. Straight after half time he missed from the penalty spot. “It was a bad shot” he admitted in an interview with BVBtotal!

Marco, what made the difference in the match against Mainz?

The goals, of course. The 2-0 win was very important because otherwise we would have become tight at the back. Our morale was quite low so it was great that “Miki” scored a goal. We had problems in the build-up play because Mainz had been playing well. We knew that it was going to be a tough game in which we needed to win the second balls. At the end we were very happy with the victory.

When it was dangerous up front, you and “Auba” were often involved. How did the goal look from your point of view?

A Mainz defender made a bad pass and “Miki” picked it up and played it to “Auba”. At first I thought he was going to shoot then he passed it to me. My first touch was very important and then I slotted it home.

The missed penalty was not so nice of course from your point of view. The goalkeeper gambled a bit. What did you make of the situation?

It’s simple: the shot was poor and that bugs me a lot.

“It will give us some assurance”

You were very self-critical at the end but it’s not so bad because you picked up all three points. How did you motivate yourself during the international break to get the three points after four games without a win?

The coach spoke to us because the games before the international break did not turn out the way we had imagined. The break was therefore not so bad; on the other hand we played a difficult game today. In the past we might not have won such a game and today we didn’t play well at all. However, we know that we have to improve a lot in order to get back to where we were before.

Will the result give you a boost for next week?

It will give us some assurance. Prior to this game we had three draws and a defeat, which was not what we had anticipated but we stand together as a team and discuss our mistakes. The match against Mainz, in terms of tackling, was the first step in the right direction. Our game will come back to us gradually.
