Paired with Neven Subotic at the heart of the BVB defence, Sven Bender delivered a flawless performance against Wolfsburg. Not bad for a player who usually plies his trade in a defensive midfield position. Speaking to Sky, the 26-year-old gave his thoughts on his new role and the 2-1 victory away to the "Wolves".

What was the match like for you?
Intense. It was extremely disappointing to concede such a late penalty. Although Wolfsburg did deserve a goal, the timing of it hurt. But I thought it was outstanding how we came back after that. In the second half we really struggled at times and Wolfsburg were extremely strong. But for our last attack of the match to go like that is fantastic. It feels absolutely incredible.

What does the win mean for BVB?
It is extremely important. In the first half we put in a really good performance, but Wolfsburg were better after the break. But that's the spirit of the team, coming back to win like that. We know just how good they are at home. Now we have opened up a lead over the teams behind us.

And above you?
The important thing is that we won this six-pointer today. Of course everything is still possible. But we also know that if Bayern win their games, then it's going to be tough for us. We want to maintain or even extend the lead that we currently have over the teams behind us.

Is playing in central defence now your preferred position?
When you have played in defensive midfield for years, it is not going to be your preferred position. But as I have already said, given the way we currently play football at BVB, this position suits me. I feel more comfortable all the time, though I still like playing in defensive midfield too.
