Last week's match against Tottenham was the 18th time BVB have won at home in the first leg of a European tie. Only once – in November 1987 – did they then fail to progress. After beating Club Bruges 3-0, Borussia lost the return leg 5-0 after extra-time and were knocked out.

Historic win: The 3-0 first leg victory was BVB's biggest-ever win against an English opponent and Tottenham's biggest-ever defeat after 90 minutes in 137 UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League matches.

Strong home record: Tottenham are now unbeaten in nine consecutive European home games (seven wins, two draws) and have won their last two Europa League matches at White Hart Lane by three goals. In their previous seven home games against German teams, Spurs have only conceded one goal and have twice won 3-0.

BVB strong on the road: Borussia's away record under Thomas Tuchel is excellent. There have been four victories, one draw (in Thessaloniki) and one defeat (in Krasnodar). Only once did they fail to find the net. Their last defeat by three goals came at the hands of Real Madrid, who beat them 3-0 in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League quarter-final.

Trigger happy: The Black and Yellows have had by far the most shots of all the teams in this season's UEFA Europa League (129).

Woodwork kings: Gonzalo Castro's shot that hit the post in the first leg was the tenth time a Dortmund player has hit the woodwork in this season's competition. Henrikh Mkhitaryan has hit the post or bar five times.

Staying power: BVB are one of only two teams to have made it all the way from the third qualifying round to the last 16. The other is Spanish outfit Athletic Bilbao.

Birthday boy: Shinji Kagawa will turn 27 on the day of the return leg. During his spell with Manchester United he faced Tottenham four times, scoring once, but never won (two draws, two defeats).

Penalty shootout: If the score is 3-0 to Spurs after 120 minutes, a penalty shootout will determine the victor. Tottenham have been involved in spot-kicks three times, beating RSC Anderlecht in the 1984 UEFA Cup final and losing in 2008 and 2013 against Eindhoven and Basel respectively. BVB have twice won a shootout (against Auxerre in the semi-final in 1993 and against Rangers in 1999) and have been knocked out twice (against Bruges in 2003 and in Udine in 2008). (br)
