On Saturday there were 120 minutes and a penalty shootout between euphoria and sadness. Before and during the Cup Final against Bayern Munich over 100,000 fans were supporting BVB in Dortmund and Berlin, shortly before the last minute disappointing loss.

The euphoric feeling shared by 20,000 fans in Dortmund and over 80,000 BVB supporters in Berlin ended late Saturday evening in a sea of tears. Douglas Costa had just scored the decisive penalty and the Dortmund fans started to file out.

Friedensplatz emptied out quickly and at times the Königswall was even suspended because thousands of BVB supporters blocked the road on the way to the train station. Those who watched the game on the giant screens held their head in their hands with tears in their eyes. The final outcome of the game was etched on their faces.

In the Westfallenhalle the disappointed fans sang a final “You’ll never walk alone”, before making their way home quietly with their heads low. Just 45 minutes after the final whistle the forecourt of the Westfallenhalle was deserted.

It was even worse at the train station, where thousands of fans just wanted to go home. Around midnight the city was practically empty. The police reported no major incidents.

The fans were saddened in Berlin too. 14,000 enthusiastic fans watched a public showing of the game in the Sommergarten, but the Cup Party ended just as abruptly as it did in Dortmund.
