André Schürrle and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were the match-winners in BVB's 2-1 win over 1. FSV Mainz 05. After the game the pair joined their team-mates as they spoke to the media.

Sebastian Rode: "It was extremely important to start the season with a victory. We didn't get into the game so well. Mainz did not make it easy for us. We didn't play the ball forward quickly enough. But ultimately all that counts in the end is the three points and we can build on that. Out there on the pitch it was clear to us that we were not as lively as we could have been at certain points due to the temperatures. Overall we put in a decent performance."

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: "I feel very good. I'm ready to compete with Robert Lewandowski for the crown as the Bundesliga's top-scorer. But I need to thank my team-mates. It wasn't easy out there today due to the weather, but we still managed to start the season with a win. We can be happy."

Marc Bartra: "I am very happy and content that we won the match. The interplay between myself and my team-mates is already working well, but it still needs to get better bit by bit. In the next few weeks we will continue to work on this. From my point of view we should have been awarded a penalty in the ninth minute. I was on the ball and the Mainz player clearly touched me. But anyway, we won, so with that in mind it is not worth getting annoyed about it now."

André Schürrle: "What I would like the most right now is to completely submerge myself in the ice bath."

Marcel Schmelzer: "We know that things were not exactly like we imagined they would be. Nevertheless it was a very good game given the air here in the stadium. Compliments also to all the new players who were out on the pitch today. Their performance was really good when it counted." (fu)
