Speaking to sky in an interview after the match, Mario Götze and Gonzalo Castro accepted the team were to blame for the defeat. "We conceded unnecessary goals, which wasn't ideal," said Götze, with whom Castro agreed. Coach Peter Bosz wasn't a happy man either. Here we bring you the reactions to the match against Leipzig.

Peter Bosz: "It wasn't a great game. The match involved a lot of challenges and was extremely exciting, but we didn't play particularly good football – especially in the first period. We had a lot of trouble dealing with Leipzig's pressing and put in a poor performance in the opening half. We wanted to change that after the restart but then immediately conceded the third and had a man sent off. Things naturally got very difficult after that."

Gonzalo Castro: "We gave away two goals far too easily in the first half, that can't be allowed to happen. Then it obviously got difficult, because Leipzig were just waiting for such situations. They counter very well. The red card at the start of the second half obviously wasn't very helpful either, but generally we were an entirely different team after the interval. It's a shame that it ultimately wasn't enough for a draw. But, as I said, you can't concede such goals in a big game like that. Even if it was heated out there, with lots of fouls: we screwed the game up for ourselves in the first half."

Mario Götze: "We're to blame for the defeat tonight. We conceded unnecessary goals, which wasn't ideal, although we could've got an equaliser towards the end. Once we'd taken the early lead, we should've shown a lot more stability. And then, of course, the second half could hardly have started in worse fashion with the red card and the penalty, but we still bounced back well. Towards the end, we were a little bit unlucky."

"We always believed in ourselves"

Ralph Hasenhüttl (Rasenballsport Leipzig coach): "We always believed in ourselves and really put the opposition under pressure. I had the feeling that we had more solutions than BVB – even though we had to work really hard when we didn't have the ball. I had already said in the run-up to the match that it would be end to end. And that's how it was. I'm proud of my team. In the end we deserved to get the victory." (djg)
