BVB did not play to their potential against Bayer Leverkusen despite upping their performance in the second half, but ultimately could not find a way through Bayer’s resilient defence.

Record goal: Karim Bellarabi took nine seconds to score the quickest goal in the history of the Bundesliga. The previous record was 11 seconds.

Déjà-vu: Borussia Dortmund have failed to win their Bundesliga opener for only the second time under Jürgen Klopp - the other one was also a home game against Leverkusen (2010/11 a 2-0 defeat).

Bogey team: BVB have lost five of their last 10 home games against Leverkusen – against no other side have they suffered more defeats at home over that period.

First defeat: In his 11th appearance in the Bundesliga Mitch Langerak suffered his first defeat on Saturday. Both of Leverkusen’s attempts on target went in, and both were unstoppable.

A first: Marco Reus wore the captain’s armband for the first time in the Bundesliga, but was unable to get a shot on goal.

New: Borussia Dortmund started with two new signings in the shape of Matthias Ginter and Ciro Immobile after being restricted to the bench against Stuttgarter Kickers. However, both had already played in front of the Dortmund crowd in the 2-0 Supercup win over Bayern Munich.

Rough football: Leverkusen committed twice as many fouls (26) as BVB (13) and so more than in any of their games last season.

Strong away form: Bayer Leverkusen continued in Dortmund where they left off last season when they recorded an amazing nine away wins.
