0-2 in Mainz, 1-2 in Schalke: It’s been a long time since BVB lost consecutive away games. In fact the last time was way back in 2010-11. Speaking on Sky TV Neven Subotic pointed the finger at missed chances as the reason for the defeat.

Neven Subotic: We dominated the game, albeit not completely in the first half, but we were still better than Schalke. In the second half we turned the screw again, created chances. We were a real threat but we just couldn’t find the net.

Mats Hummels: Our league position is a long way from what we need it to be.

Matthias Ginter: We conceded two quick goals. To chase a two-goal deficit was hard. We piled on the pressure in the second half trying to get that equaliser and as far as the edge of the box we played well. However we just couldn’t penetrate in the final third. It’s annoying to come up short because apart from their last gasp counter-attack, Schalke offered no threat in the second half.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: It’s a huge disappointment. We just weren’t switched on enough at the start. The early goals were awful. We did everything we could in the second half and we always felt we had another goal in us but we just didn’t get the rub of the green.

Erik Durm: It’s a painful defeat, for the club, for the fans. We were desperate to win today.

Ralf Fährmann (S04): It was an incredible game. In the second half we simply gave our all. I can’t think of a better birthday present for a Schalke fan!

Jens Keller (S04): We started the game oh so well. We created early pressure. Their goal knocked us out of our stride in terms of playing with the ball. But the guys put their bodies on the line. It was a very important win, particularly for our fans. The whole of Schalke is pretty happy today!
