“I can only praise the team’s resolve!”

Jürgen Klopp on the goals conceded:

Let’s deal in facts: If you concede goals like that winning games is going to be tough. We are shooting ourselves in the foot. These mistakes had a huge bearing on the game. On all the statistics we are ahead except for the ones that matter. Schalke scored twice, with huge help from us, and we just the once.

…on the attempted comeback:

We get a goal back, apply pressure, run rings round them. We gave everything physically but we didn’t stay calm, or didn’t have the luck in the crucial moments. You can seek to explain everything in a game of football, but when you take a defeat like today, then you really just have to ‘feel’ it. Nevertheless we will battle on.

…on the starting line-up:

We have a number of problems and so today we settled on a line-up designed to win the game and yet also not over-expose one or two of our players. It could so easily have worked out alright. We wanted to play a simple game to get in behind them.

…on what seemed a peaceful afternoon on the terraces:

That’s the way forward, plain and simple. I hope it has been quiet everywhere. Naturally I focus on what goes on in the stadium. This game doesn’t need any sideshows.

…on the season so far:

It is anything but a good start. We can’t be happy but do not despair. The lads are working so hard and I can only praise my team’s resolve. We ran and ran to try to turn things round, but it wasn’t to be today. The goals we concede, not just today, really shouldn’t happen the way they are doing just now.

…on the future:

We have to stick at it and analyse the facts and find solutions. We are not on song in terms of our game play, not on song in terms of fitness either. We went unrewarded for our great efforts today. That can always happen in life. We need to bounce back. We will be back. It may take a little while, but we will be back!
