It was all quiet at Turk Telekom Arena on Tuesday night. During the final training session, the only sound heard was the traffic from the nearby eight-lane motorway. On Wednesday night at 2045 CET, however, all hell is going to break loose when Galatasaray take on Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Jürgen Klopp expects a “very emotional affair“ as there’s a “lot at stake” for Galatasaray after only picking up one point from their two group matches. Klopp said: “We know what to expect.” Last year, so Klopp, Galatasaray also struggled at the start before improving as the competition went on. In the end, they reached the round of the last 16.

Last year, Juventus were Galatasaray’s victims – after picking up six points from two games Borussia Dortmund are eager not to become their next one. Defence will be key. “What I expect above all from my team is to be solid in defence. We have a lot room for improvement in that sense.”

At the pre- match conference, which is always held on the eve before the game, Jürgen Klopp was joined by Ilkay Gündogan. “Of course, the game has a sentimental pull,” said the Germany international with Turkish roots. “I follow Turkish football closely, watch the derbies on television and was of course very happy when Galatasaray won the UEFA Cup in 2000.”

And he wouldn’t mind if they do it again next year. Borussia Dortmund, however, have different ambitions as they seek to continue their successful run in the UEFA Champions League, and a draw or even a win would go a long way towards that goal. “We share an idea football, and that is based on a defensive game plan,” said Gündogan. “Most important will be that we defend as a team and that we have things more under control.”
