“We are far away from being perfect, even if it is quite remarkable to win a Champions League match 4-0 away from home,” said Jürgen Klopp after BVB’s third win from three matches in European club football's premier competition. At the post-game press conference, the Dortmund coach talked about tactical issues and selection changes and the difference between UEFA Champions League and Bundesliga.

Did you expect to win so comfortable at Galatasaray?

I actually don’t think it was a comfortable victory. We just scored the goals at the right time and still had to defend properly for almost the full 90 minutes. We did a lot of things right. We defended deeper and more solid and as a consequence scored great goals. And then you also need a bit of luck, like Marco Reus had with his goal. But today’s match was certainly not easy.

Is the Champions League easier than the Bundesliga because the German teams know BVB better?

I believe that all of our opponents in the Champions League know us well. I would be really surprised if Arsenal, Anderlecht or Galatasaray don’t know us. To win the games against them, a couple of factors had to come together. Galatasaray are a team that likes to play football. Tonight, we defended them well, and they didn’t defend that well. That’s why we picked up a fully deserved win.

Galatasaray tried to play football and gave Dortmund the space to play their football. On Saturday, BVB take on Hannover in the Bundesliga, a team that likes to play deep. It will be a different task to solve – is that the difference between Bundesliga and Champions League?

No, we just defended much better. We lost possession a few times today as well, but we got back at the right moment and defended as a unit. We were also much more clinical up front than for example against Cologne. We are far away from being perfect, even if it is quite remarkable to win a Champions League match 4-0 away from home.

What’s the injury situation looking like after the game?

Mats Hummels has muscular problems; that’s why we had to take him off. The same applies to Shinji Kagawa, and Manni Bender has been taken to hospital for a scan.

How will you approach the next games in the Bundesliga?

We won’t give away any space anymore, that’s the plan. It’s vital for us to stop giving away easy goals. We have to be willing to win games in a dirty way, and this will be the case from now on.

To play with three central defenders worked out well, didn’t it? Was that a one-off or will it be a pattern from now on?

I’m happy that it worked out. Papa’s tackling skills have been useful for us on many occasions. I told him after the game, ‘You have cemented that role,’ but Kevin Grosskreutz really needed a break as well.
