The league table, the proverb says, doesn’t lie. And it reveals the bitter truth: in the 2-1 defeat at Werder Bremen BVB slumped to their 10th defeat this season. At the halfway mark of the campaign, that’s more than Jürgen Klopp’s men have suffered in any of the previous six seasons.

Borussia Dortmund enjoyed more possession (62 percent) and had more attempts on goal (14-12), but Werder created the better chances to pick up a deserved victory. BVB failed to make advantage of their dominance, and it was no surprise that their goal came from a set piece.

Poor first half of the season: 15 points after 17 games is Borussia Dortmund’s worst tally since the 1987-88 campaign.

Relegation zone: For the first time in 30 years, BVB are occupying a relegation spot at the end of the first half of the season.

Poor away form: The Black and Yellows have suffered as many defeats away from home (seven) as in the last three seasons combined! With only four points on the road to their name this term, BVB have the worst away record in the Bundesliga. After winning the opening away match (3-2 at Augsburg), they have only collected one more point on their travels (at Paderborn).

A first: For the first time ever, an Ikay Gündogon corner resulted in a goal in the Bundesliga.

Set-piece goal: Mats Hummels’s goal was the first one to come from a set piece since the fifth match this season, and the first from a corner since the second game. Werder have already conceded their 11th goal from a set piece, with only Stuttgart having conceded more from set pieces this season.

Trailing: When trailing at halftime, Borussia Dortmund have lost all of their games this season, while Werder have won all of their games when leading at halftime.

Conceding early: For the third time this season, the Black and Yellows conceded in the first five minutes of the game (against Frankfurt in the fifth minute, against Leverkusen after nine seconds).

Upward trend: Werder celebrated their fourth win in eight games under Viktor Skripnik – of the previous nine games under Robin Dutt the Bremen outfit hadn’t won a single match.

Strong at home: In the four home games under their new coach, Werder have picked up 10 of 12 points.

Match-winner: Davie Selke scored for the third home game in a row and also set up Werder’s second.
