Three wins in a row for the first time this season and BVB leap to provisional 10th in the table. Borussia Dortmund's resurgence continues. Two offensive players in perfect harmony who have suddenly hit top form are inspiring the whole team to ever more impressive performances: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Marco Reus.

Marco Reus was involved in three goals in the last three games.

The statistics: four goals and two assists for Aubameyang, three goals and one assist for Reus, and that's just in the last three games. Overall these two players have been directly involved in 17 of BVB's 28 goals this season. That's over 60 percent. The figures speak for themselves.

“The interplay with Marco Reus really suits me”, said Aubameyang after the match in Stuttgart. “We're like brothers.” It's not just on the field of play that these two footballing technicians are in such perfect harmony. Off the field too they get along really well. Two things that go hand in hand. “The fact that we get along so well on a personal level has an effect on the pitch too”, said the Gabon international.

Duo lifts entire team

Aubameyang and Reus are not just brothers in spirit, they both have very similar styles of play. Both have great speed, both are technically very good, both pose a constant goal threat, both are absolute specialists when it comes to executing set plays. These are qualities a team requires if it wants to haul itself out of the relegation zone. There's a reason why Jürgen Klopp has made Aubameyang his main striker since his return from the African Cup of Nations.

“I prefer playing as the main striker. That's where I get the right balls and can make the most of my attacking threat”, explained Klopp's pacy African goal scorer. “I feel the coach is relying on me and that he has full faith in me, that's really important to me.”

What's more important though is that Auba and Reus are dragging the rest of Jürgen Klopp's side with them. The whole team has been enjoying a marked improvement in form since the liberating victory in Freiburg. Take Shinji Kagawa, for example, who created two goals against Stuttgart with some exemplary play and had one assist against Freiburg. Or Ilkay Gündogan, who also had one assist in Freiburg and scored himself against VfB.

Ten crucial days

Aubameyang and Reus - like “brothers“.

Yet with all the positive things that have happened in the last three weeks, coach Jürgen Klopp is keeping his feet firmly on the ground. “We still have a lot to do and there are reasons why we are where we are in the table”, explained Klopp after the game in Stuttgart. “But on the whole we're on the right track, even if it's noticeable that a few jitters start creeping into the team's play when you're only leading 2-1.”

Marco Reus thinks the same: “The win against Stuttgart was incredibly important but I'm not 100 percent satisfied with the performance.” Shinji Kagawa also thinks there's still “a lot of potential for improvement”. Nevertheless, Borussia Dortmund are continuing their upward momentum, thanks to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, thanks to Marco Reus and thanks to a team that is growing in confidence and playing better with each game. This self-belief will be something the team must take with them into the next 10 days, with vital games against Juventus, Schalke and Dresden coming up.
