Borussia Dortmund’s players gave a realistic assessment of their performance after the 2-1 defeat to Juventus: “In the second half we were lucky not to concede a third,” said Marco Reus. But the scorer of BVB’s goal was also optimistic about the return leg.

Roman Weidenfeller: “We can live with the result. Had we been a bit more clinical up front, we could have achieved an even better result. But you shouldn’t push your luck. It was an even game with chances on both sides, and the result reflects that. For a goalkeeper it’s very difficult when the ball is played back in such a fierce way. I was only able to get to it with my fingertips, and couldn’t push it aside. It doesn’t make you look good as a goalkeeper.”

Marco Reus: “We knew at half-time that we need to defend better. After the equaliser I thought we could get more out of it. We were right in the game before we conceded a silly goal. Unfortunately, the equaliser didn’t help much to settle our nerves. In the second half we were lucky not to concede a third. We weren’t determined enough and will have to do much better in the last third. But everything is possible. Now we have to fix this in the second leg.”

Massimiliano Allegri (Juventus coach): “I was pleased with our performance. We were solid in defence and restricted them to few chances. But it was a difficult match as Borussia effectively shut down passing lanes. We're happy because we've won the home leg and above all we performed well. Both sides can still progress.”
