Football in its purest form! A sold-out stadium in Bochum, a wonderful atmosphere on the terraces and three goals in an all-Ruhr affair between VfL Bochum and Borussia Dortmund. In a match that came a week before Bochum's second-tier campaign gets under way and 13 days before BVB's first competitive match, the Black and Yellows dominated the play but failed to convert their chances.

Boris Rupert reporting from Bochum

In front of 29,299 spectators VfL opened the scoring through Terrazzino on 33 minutes and doubled their lead in the 59th minute courtesy of a wonder goal from Hoogland. BVB missed a succession of chances before Dudziak pulled a goal back in the 80th minute, though his late consolation could not prevent the visitors from slipping to a 2-1 (1-0) defeat.

For the first time in pre-season - in which they have won four matches, scored 34 times and conceded just once - Thomas Tuchel experimented tactically, fielding a 4-4-2 formation with a diamond in midfield. Kagawa and Castro spearheaded the diamond in the first and second halves respectively, with Gündogan and Mkhitaryan on the wings and Aubameyang and Reus (Hofmann in the second period) leading the line.

Another change to BVB's pre-season approach was that the coach only made two changes in the half-time interval. Among the absentees for BVB was Weidenfeller, who is following an individual fitness programme.

BVB rounded off an intensive week of training with a tough away trip to VfL. And while the men from Bochum - who are still unbeaten in their summer friendlies - are putting the finishing touches to their pre-season preparations with the new season just a week away, BVB are still in the early stages of preparation. Yet it was the men in Black and Yellow who dictated the play and the rhythm, with their best chances in the opening 20 minutes coming from a succession of corners, a Gündogan effort which struck the crossbar and an attempt from distance by Mkhitaryan that was pushed onto the post by VfL 'keeper Luthe. Aubameyang also came close on the 20-minute mark. However Borussia's play lacked precision, with a number of passes not reaching their destination.

Despite spending much of the first period camped in their own half, it was Bochum who broke the deadlock. After Mkhitaryan lost the ball in his own half, Terrazzino was presented with an easy chance to make it 1-0 from a centre-left position 14 metres out (33). Subsequent attempts from Gündogan (36) and Reus (40) to equalise were thwarted by Luthe, before Hoogland narrowly missed the chance to double VfL's lead from a free-kick (44).

Bochum's performance combined defensive craft with merciless efficiency in attack, the latter embodied by Hoogland's unstoppable strike after an hour which went straight into the top left corner. Two goals from three chances!

It came after Hofmann was denied by a strong save from Bochum's second-choice shot-stopper Riemann (55), who also thwarted Maruoka (70) and Castro (73). But with 10 minutes remaining, Dudziak reduced the arrears courtesy of a precise through-ball from Durm to set up a thrilling final few minutes.
