After 49 days summer break, Borussia Dortmund is back in action again: one day after the German national team was unluckily knocked out of the EURO, the German vice Champion BVB played their first friendly match of season 2016/17 and won this game 5-2 (2-0) away to Oberliga club SpVgg Erkenschwick.

Boris Rupert reports from Erkenschwick

Head Coach Thomas Tuchel still had to do without many players: this meant that EURO participants Julian Weigl, Roman Bürki, Marc Bartra, Raffael Guerreiro, Jakub Blaszczykowski, Lukasz Piszczek, Nuri Sahin and Emre Mor were missing; they also had to do without Christian Pulisic, Shinji Kagawa and new signing Mikel Merino, who were also busy playing for their national sides and club sides until the middle of June. Joo Ho Park, who is slightly injured was also out of contention.

Tuchel still had 23 players available, using some players from the U19 and the U23 squads, so that he could make complete changes at half time. BVB operated in a 3-2-4-1 general formation in both halves and they started the game just as they hoped they would: after exactly three minutes Ousmane Dembele played a one-tow with U19 new signing Jano Baxmann and he coolly put the ball in the back of the net to make it 0-1.

BVB then created many clear cut chances, however Erkenschwick's goalkeeper Oberwahrenbrock made sure they came to nothing with a string of great saves. The goalkeeper only made one mistake: after Jacob Bruun Larsen passed the ball into the area, he let the ball run free and a dumbfounded central defender Konarski put the ball in his own net to make it 0-2 (15.). Borussia Dortmund was very much the team in control in front of roughly 6000 spectators in the Stimbergstadion, they had many flowing movements, but they were often a little bit too careless when the ball was in the vicinity of the penalty area

Marco Hober nearly scored the third goal with a diving header just a few seconds into the second half, but the ball just went over the crossbar. Instead, Passlack scored after being set up by Gonzalo Castro from about twelve metres (48.). In the 72.minute Christoph Zimmermann headed the ball into the goal after a corner kick by Castro to make the score 0-4. After setting up two goals, Castro then got one himself - after a solo run he drove the ball into the goal from 18 metres with quite some force (80.) and finally Marcel Schmelzer hit the crossbar with a freekick (85.). In the dying phase of the game Erkenschwick then did manage to get two goals back. First of all Konarski (83.) and then Abulhanov (90.) scored for Erkenschwick.

BVB 1. half: Weidenfeller – Ginter, Sokratis, Burnic – Leitner, Rode – Bruun Larsen, Dembele, Mangala, Baxmann – Aubameyang.
