Six days after beating Manchester United 4-1, Borussia Dortmund concluded their China Tour against Manchester City, though this time it wasn't to be as the Black and Yellows' second outing in this summer's International Champions Cup ended in a 6-5 penalty defeat against last year's fourth-place team from England.

A tough nut to crack: the agile Emre Mor.

Thomas Tuchel was without seven top players, including EURO 2016 participants Götze, Schürrle, Weigl, Guerreiro and Piszczek, as well as Reus and Aubameyang. Nevertheless, the Black and Yellows created some good chances at the outset, with Mor coming close to breaking the deadlock in the ninth minute only to shoot narrowly wide, before Dembélé missed from 17 metres out (17). In a frenetic encounter on a poor-quality surface, the English side also had a number of chances to score, with Nacho forcing shot-stopper Bürki into a strong save directly before the half-time interval.

BVB countered City's 3-4-3 formation with their own 4-3-3 system, with Mor, Ramos and Dembélé (from right to left) forming the attacking triumvirate and Schmelzer asserting his usual attacking influence down the left.

The second half saw wholesale changes for BVB as Tuchel switched six times at the break before making a triple substitution on the hour-mark. The changes initially disrupted Borussia's flow somewhat and Man City had slightly more of the ball, yet Bürki, who alongside Leitner was involved from start to finish, was initially only forced to make one save. At the other end Larsen's strong cross failed to reach Kagawa as a Manchester City defender intervened at the last minute (74). Shortly afterwards Castro was through on goal after link-up play from Kagawa and Hober but he shot over (76). For the last 20 minutes, the Black and Yellows were the dominant force once again.

It was in this phase that Manchester City scored through Aguero, who fired home Silva's cross (79). Though BVB were denied a penalty for a Fernandinho foul on Kagawa, the deserved equaliser came in the sixth minute of extra-time when Pulisic drilled home following a short corner (Kagawa, Leitner) to make it 1-1. The clash then went to penalties, where the 16th taker, Dortmund's Merino, missed from the spot...

BVB: Bürki – Ginter (Merino, 46), Sokratis (Bender, 46), Bartra (Larsen, 63), Schmelzer (Passlack, 46) – Sahin (Burnic, 63) – Rode (Castro, 46), Leitner – Mor (Pulisic, 46), Ramos (Hober, 63), Dembélé (Kagawa, 46)
