The German men's Olympic Team has reached the semi-final of the the Olympic football tournament after a deserved 4-0 (1-0) victory over Portugal. Serge Gnabry, world champion Matthias Ginter, Davie Selke and Philipp Max, who made an appearance as a substitute, all scored to put the team in DFB Trainer Horst Hrubesch's charge on course for a medal.

The German team will now face Nigeria on Wednesday in São Paulo (from 21:00 CET, live on ZDF), Nigeria having defeated Denmark 2-0 with Borussia Dortmund's Jakob Bruun Larsen among their number.

During the win against Portugal, Matthias Ginter fired home with a header after connecting with a corner kick to take the score to 2-0. Sven Bender put in a strong performance, occupying the role of "holding midfielder" in front of the defensive line. (br)
