Borussia Dortmund have lost the 2016 Supercup despite putting in a good performance. The Black and Yellows failed to a convert a number of chances on goal in front of 81,360 spectators in a sold-out Signal Iduna Park, and were defeated by FC Bayern Munich 0-2 (0-0) in an entertaining encounter.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang against Javi Martinez.

As expected, Borussia Dortmund's starting eleven consisted of players who had been in training for longer than ten days. For that reason, Götze and Schürrle remained on the bench at the beginning of the match. Three new signings in Bartra, Rode and Dembélé played from the beginning on.

After some tentative exchanges in the first five minutes, the game really got going. Bartra set up Kagawa on the edge of the area, his subsequent shot from 13 metres out flying just wide (6'). Soon after, the Spaniard was once again the creator of a chance: Bartra hit a 50 metre pass from the edge of Dortmund's own area into Aubameyang's path, who only had Neuer left in front of him – but Martinez behind him. The Munich man managed to get a foot in-between to deflect Aubameyang's attempt away from goal, taking the ball just past the net (8'). Shortly thereafter, Aubameyang once more: After a free-kick variation from Castro, the Gabonese pulled his shot wide from a tight angle (11').

Borussia Dortmund were piling the pressure onto a well-oiled Munich machine, with only one new signing gracing the field of play for them, namely, Mats Hummels. The men from Dortmund prevented Munich from notching up any shots on goal in the first 36 minutes, and should have been given a penalty-kick, but referee Welz, standing just a few metres away from the incident and with a clear view, surprisingly took no action after Alonso's clear handball (15'). And after 27 minutes, Ribery could well have seen more than just a yellow card after lashing out at Passlack twice with his arm...

Emotions boiled over temporarily. When the playing of football was finally resumed, Dembélé found himself centre-stage: He was denied by Neuer twice within 120 seconds before firing just wide after a beautiful step-over in the area (32'/33'/34').

After Castro had finally had a shot on goal for the Bavarians, Bürki blocked his headed effort shortly afterwards with a world-class save to stop Munich from taking a 1-0 lead, something which would have been against the run of play (38').

The tempo remained high in the second half. Passlack took aim from 14 metres out, but Neuer cleared strongly, conceding a corner-kick in the process (50'). Dembélé remained a threat: his shot from 17 metres out was similarly pushed wide by Neuer for a corner (57').

With a chance ratio of 7-2 in their favour, Dortmund's lead was by now long overdue, but it was the opposing side who chalked a goal up first. Vidal fired a thunderbolt of a strike at Bürki from the edge of the area, which he was able to save, but the Swiss was helpless to prevent the Chilean from knocking in the rebound. The men from Munich led 1-0 after 57 minutes played.

Tuchel responded with a double substitution: Weigl and Schürrle were sent on for Ramos and Dembélé. Aubameyang came off a little later to be replaced by Mor. However, instead of an equaliser came a second goal against Dortmund. Hummels knocked down a corner-kick with his head into Müller's feet, who side-footed home to bring about the game's final score, 2-0 (79').
