Mainz 05 coach Martin Schmidt was dignified in defeat, lauding BVB as an attacking and passing machine, but BVB boss Thomas Tuchel did not entirely agree with his Swiss counterpart in the aftermath of the 2-1 triumph.

Martin Schmidt (1. FSV Mainz 05): "If I'd known before the match that we'd keep Dortmund at bay from open play, I'd have been satisfied. For 90 minutes we defended against an attacking and passing machine, giving away nothing from open play. We lost due to two set-piece situations; that wasn't so clever from us. On top of that we did not switch the play too well, which is a key aspect of our play. Overall we were dangerous, effective and good in the box. But today was still too soon for us to win in Dortmund. We'll get another chance to have a go. And at some point, I'm convinced it will happen. A 1-1 in the second half against Dortmund represents a good start to the Bundesliga for us."

Thomas Tuchel (BVB): "Today we might have been attacking and passing machine, but we were not a proper machine. That's not meant as an accusation, but more of a description. We looked nervous to some extent, did not find the right structure and did not find the spaces behind Mainz's first line of defence. On the occasions we did find them, then we had difficulties getting our combination play going. It looked a little bit dogged. It was an arduous victory. In the second half we defended the counter-attacks well. We sank our teeth into the game and always kept our heads up. The result is important, above all because we didn't play our best on the day." (fu)
