Speaking in an interview with Westdeutscher Rundfunk, Thomas Tuchel set a clear objective for the second half of the Bundesliga season. "It is clear that we want to finish in the top three," the BVB boss said.

Thomas Tuchel on the objectives for the second half of the season: "At the least we want to finish in the top three and qualify automatically for the Champions League. We know we'll need to get a lot of points from our 18 games to achieve that. So it goes without saying we have a lot to do."

…the lack of consistency in the first half of the season: "We need all the players, especially the key players. This has now become evident with Sven Bender and Marco Reus back in action. We need to play with a certain ease and with a good balance between offence and defence. Plus, I have confidence in the time factor."

…the difficulties during the first half of the season: "That came as a surprise to me. The problems arose from the injuries to important players, then we had tough spells. But there were matches where we played poorly last season too and still won those 2-0."

…the relationship with Hans-Joachim Watzke and Michael Zorc: "It's a highly professional, friendly relationship. The fact that there are sometimes differences of opinion is normal. That is absolutely necessary to ensure further development. I feel totally happy. There is no need to justify oneself."

…a possible contract extension: "We have not yet spoken about this. I am an extremely poor negotiating partner during the course of a season, I am completely focused on team affairs. I am relaxed. At the moment there is no need for discussions."

…the accusation of not being close to the fans: "I think that's extremely unfair. It has been explained often how highly I think of them. I am incredibly happy that the fans don't call for me after the matches. I would not know how to behave in front of the South Stand – it would probably be terrible. For this reason I feel incredible happy if I can stay where I am. My role has been discussed clearly and sincerely."

…his favourite drink: "Still water – but that's a boring choice. After victories we drink a glass of champagne. That has now become a ritual, because the many victories we got last season meant it lost significance. Otherwise definitely gin and tonic. No beer, no wine."

…rewards after victories: "I tend to eat all sorts of unhealthy things. Chocolate, crisps, nuts. Everything is possible after a victory. Fast food only very, very rarely – that would have to be an away victory in the Champions League. I only need to eat fast food at night time, otherwise I don't digest it properly. So 3am in the morning."
