André Schürrle, Julian Weigl and Roman Bürki were interviewed by BVBtotal! following the match in Mainz. All three admitted that BVB's defence could have been better when the hosts scored. "Nonetheless there had been enough opportunities at the other end to kill the game earlier," said Weigl. We bring you the match reactions.

André Schürrle was dissatisfied with the result.

André Schürrle: "The fact that we conceded the equaliser at the end is brutal. Actually there was really no hint of Mainz scoring. But then came one passage of play where we unfortunately didn't defend so well. After our good start Mainz switched things up after around 15 minutes, making it more difficult for us. Thereafter we repeatedly tried – partly due to the state of the pitch – to play long balls in behind their defence. But that was not forceful enough, we did not create any more clear-cut chances. In the end it's just a bitter disappointment that we weren't able to see out the 1-0 victory."

Julian Weigl: "It really hurts to have conceded that goal. It was a difficult match, that pitch was not easy to play on. Mainz made it very, very difficult for us. Nevertheless we accepted the fight and dug in with everything we had. That makes it even tougher to take that we conceded a goal like that at the end. We needed to defend that better. Nonetheless, there had been enough opportunities at the other end to kill the game earlier."

Roman Bürki: "First of all, it obviously felt good to finally be back out on the pitch with the team. The match then went rather unfortunately for us. We could have put the game to bed earlier – even in the first half. The Mainz goal actually came from their only chance of the match. We should have stopped the cross coming in from the left wing, which was obviously hit with great strength and accuracy. Latza ran in perfectly and had the easy task of heading in. We need to mark opposing players more closely in such situations. It is difficult to completely deny the opposition any opportunities but it's just unlucky that Mainz scored with their first attempt on goal."
