The South Stand has used the first match post-Leipzig to send a strong message. Numerous signs reading "I am for Borussia, football, peaceful fan culture and" ... in block capitals ... "AGAINST VIOLENCE" were held aloft by fans in the South Stand – an initiative of the fanzine schwatzgelb.de – as the two teams made their way out onto the pitch.

Team captain Marcel Schmelzer had addressed the fans in a video message prior to kick-off: "We, the players, were and still are horrified by what happened. We're not used to seeing such actions. We love the emotional and sometimes heated atmosphere in our stadium. But purely on a sporting level! On Saturday, people were hurt. We, the team, condemn violent actions against others!" The full-back apologised to those who were injured on behalf of the team and wished them all a speedy recovery.

Stadium announcer Norbert Dickel had a few thoughtful words to say as he welcomed the fans to the Cup tie against Hertha BSC. "At this point I would usually welcome the best fans in the world to the most beautiful stadium in the world. And I would like to do just that today too, as I believe that's the case. We do not want what the club stands for to be tarnished by such actions," said Dickel. "I would like to welcome all true fans of Borussia Dortmund," he continued, prompting vociferous applause from the 80,000 spectators in attendance.

Since Saturday, the efforts to find the perpetrators have been in full swing. "I would like to ask you to remain patient for a few more days, as precision and accuracy must take precedence over speed," Hans-Joachim Watzke explained on Monday, adding: "We will do everything in our power to put an end to such things once and for all." (br)
