It was an exhilarating evening as BVB recorded a 3-2 penalty shootout victory over Hertha BSC in the DFB Cup. "Fortunately we kept our nerve at the end there," said Julian Weigl after the final whistle, while coach Thomas Tuchel declared it to be a "highly deserved victory."

Roman Bürki: "There wasn't that much for me to do leading up to the shootout. I remembered where 'Dari' liked to put his penalties from our time together at Freiburg, so I knew which way to go. For Allagui's penalty I wanted to palm the ball to the side but it struck the inside of my hand and then spun back over the line. Technically speaking, that was poor from me."

Julian Weigl: "The supporters were the 12th man for us again. It was a difficult match right from the start. Hertha made it difficult for us out there, but we still managed to create a lot of chances. If we had been more clinical in front of goal, things would have been easier. We had enough chances to win the match. But fortunately we managed to keep our nerve at the end there."

Thomas Tuchel: "Well done to Roman Bürki. He coped well with every penalty on target. Gonzo's spot-kick that put us 3-2 up was very important. That put us in a really good position. We had so many opportunities, we carved out so many chances. I didn't expect that at all. At the moment we have a real aura about us; we are showing good spirit and performing with quality. We're just missing that bit of luck in attack, that all-important goal, that last bit of desire to kill the game. It was the same against Bremen and Leipzig too. But ultimately this victory over Hertha was highly deserved."

Rune Jarsten (Hertha BSC goalkeeper): "We battled and played well but unfortunately we didn't quite manage it."

Pal Dardai (Hertha BSC coach): "It was a very good match with chances at both ends. For a long time it deserved to be a draw. It was advantage BVB in the second period but they didn't make it count. There's a lot of luck in penalty shootouts. The team and the fans can be proud of the performance, even if it hurts to lose."
