They ended an unsuccessful streak on the 25.February 2016: BVB achieved their first win away in Portugal at the fourth attempt when they beat FC Porto

1-0. Eight months later they celebrated the next win away to Sporting Lisbon by beating them 2-1.

The situation

  • Borussia Dortmund set a new goals scored record in the group stage: the team from Westphalia scored 21 times and came in first place in group F - in front of Real Madrid. Now they play Benfica, who came in second in group B behind SSC Napoli.
  • BVB has won every one of their last five games against opponents from Portugal.

  • Since they lost 1-2 at home to Napoli at the beginning of December, Benfica has won twelve of 15 competitive matches (one draw, two defeats).
  • Rui Vitória's team has lost two of their last ten home games in the UEFA Champions League (five wins, three draws).
  • After they drew 2-2 against Bayern in last year's quarter final, Benfica has not lost at home in four games against German teams. The last Bundesliga team who beat Benfica in Lisbon was FC Schalke 04. The Portuguese lost against them 2-1 in the group stage in December, 2010.
  • Benfica's record at home against German teams stands at ten wins, eight draws and two defeats.
  • Benfica is looking to qualify for the quarter finals for the third time in the last six seasons. Last year the Portuguese side beat St.Petersburg 1-0 at home and 2-1 away from home in the round of the last 16, before they were knocked out at the quarter final stage by 3-2 on aggregate against FC Bayern Munich.
  • Benfica had the lowest points tally of all teams in the group stage to qualify for the last 16 (eight).

 Facts about Borussia

  • Thomas Tuchel's team has only lost two of eleven games away from home in the European Cup since the start of last season. They have won seven games and drawn the other two.

 

History

In 1963/64 BVB eliminated Benfica in the first round of the European Cup. The Portuguese team won the first leg in Lisbon by 2-1, the goals were scored by António Simões and Eusébio, Reinhold Wosab scored for Dortmund. BVB won the second leg 5-0 to go through to the next round. Franz Brungs got three goals, and Friedhelm „Timo“ Konietzka and Wosab also got on the scoresheet.
