Borussia Dortmund will be attempting to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit when they take on Benfica in the UEFA Champions League last-16 return leg on Wednesday. They currently have a 100% home record against Portuguese opposition, with five wins from five matches. Here are the match facts.

The scenario

  • Borussia Dortmund need to win by two goals if they are to progress to the quarter-finals. A 1-0 win would mean extra-time and possibly penalties. BVB have prevailed twice in European shootouts, beating French outfit Auxerre 6-5 in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup semi-final and getting the better of Scottish club Rangers in 1999. The last two penalty shootouts have ended in defeat, however: the Black and Yellows lost to Club Brugge in 2003 and Udinese in 2008. Benfica, meanwhile, beat Greeks PAOK Saloniki from the spot in 1999 but have lost two European finals on penalties: the 1988 European Cup final against PSV Eindhoven and the 2014 Europa League showpiece against Sevilla.
  • BVB have won all five matches at home to Portuguese opposition in European club competitions: 5-0 against Wednesday's opponents Benfica in 1963, 3-1 and 2-1 against Boavista in 1999 and 2001 respectively, 2-0 against Porto in 2016 and 1-0 against Sporting Lisbon later that same year.

Borussia Dortmund facts

  • BVB have lost only one of their 11 European home games under Thomas Tuchel (against PAOK Saloniki). Eight of those matches ended in victory and two in stalemate.
  • Borussia Dortmund have progressed in eight of 15 UEFA ties in which they lost the first leg away from home. They have made it through three out of four times following a 1-0 first-leg away defeat.

Benfica facts

  • Benfica have qualified 47 times for the next round after winning the first leg, and been eliminated only eight times. The record is even better following a 1-0 victory in the first leg: in that case the Lisbon-based club have progressed on 12 occasions and been knocked out only once.
  • Benfica picked up fewer points (eight) in the group stages than any other team that reached the knockout phase.
  • On the road this season they have lost 4-2 to Napoli, beaten Dynamo Kiev 2-0 and drawn 3-3 with Besiktas despite taking a 3-0 lead.
  • Their overall away record against German opposition reads as follows: two wins, six draws and 14 defeats.
