There are usually spectacular scenes aplenty when the Black & Yellows take on the Green & Whites. No other fixture in Bundesliga history has seen the team that conceded first come back and win more often than this one (15 times), while only three of their 97 top-flight meetings have ended goalless – the last one being 15 years ago. Here we bring you a statistical overview of the last match of the season.

The scenario: Third-placed Borussia Dortmund need a victory to be sure of an automatic spot in the UEFA Champions League, while eighth-placed Werder are still gunning for a UEFA Europa League spot. BVB have won ten of their last 11 meetings with Werder. Each of the last four matches have ended in victory, meaning it is the Black & Yellows who now have the marginally better head-to-head record.

Home/away: Borussia Dortmund have won seven of their last eight games at Signal Iduna Park, where they are now undefeated in 37 Bundesliga matches spanning three seasons. The last home defeat was a 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich on 4 April 2015. Bremen have lost only one of their last seven away matches – a 4-3 reverse in Cologne a fortnight ago – and are fifth in the away table (BVB are fourth, having played one game more).

Personnel matters: Borussia will be without the trio of Götze (metabolic disorder), Schürrle (fitness) and Weigl (broken ankle), while Werder are missing Bauer (fifth yellow card), Caldirola (broken metatarsal), S. Garcia (fibre tear), Fritz (syndesmosis operation), Hajrovic (fitness training following knee injury), J. Eggestein (tear of the syndesmosis) and Eilers (torn cruciate ligament).

Head-to-head: BVB have won each of their last nine home games against Werder, with the Green & Whites last avoiding defeat at Signal Iduna Park in a 2-0 win (goals from Klose and Diego) on 15 April 2007. Historically, Bremen have never had such a long away losing run against any opponent. Borussia have lost to Bremen nine times after taking the lead – more than any other team – but equally, they have more come-from-behind victories against Werder than anyone else (six). Of the nine penalties awarded between the sides at the Strobelallee, seven have been for Borussia.

Statistics: Borussia Dortmund are unbeaten in their last five matches. The last defeat came in Munich on 8 April. Only two teams have won more often than BVB this season, while only two teams have lost less often. Dortmund have only failed to score in one of their last 24 outings, while Bremen have scored at least twice in each of their last nine games. With 118 goals, games involving the North-German side are the highest-scoring in the league.

The biggest home win: Borussia have previously scored 153 goals against the men from Bremen. The biggest home win came on 2 February 1980, when the Black & Yellows breezed to a 5-0 triumph thanks to goals from Wolfgang Vöge, Theo Schneider (two), Manfred Burgsmüller and Herbert Hein.

Attendance: Signal Iduna Park will be filled to its capacity of 81,360 for the 14th time this season.

Referee: 47-year-old Günter Perl is taking charge of his 180th Bundesliga game, of which 26 have involved Borussia Dortmund. The last of those was the 3-0 home victory over VfL Wolfsburg in February. In total, BVB have won 12, drawn six and lost seven of the matches overseen by the man from Munich.
