It was 20 years ago today, on 28 May 1997, when Borussia Dortmund beat favourites and reigning champions Juventus 3-1 in the UEFA Champions League final to secure the biggest success in the club's history and become the first German side to win the competition in the new, revamped format.

It was 20:31 CET on 28 May 1997 when referee Sandor Puhl blew his whistle to signal the start of the UEFA Champions League final between Borussia Dortmund and Juventus at Munich's Olympiastadion. Exactly 95 minutes and 45 seconds later, the Black & Yellows were celebrating the greatest success in their history.

There was a key figure behind the biggest success in the club's history: Ottmar Hitzfeld. The former maths and P.E. teacher was both an outstanding football coach and a gifted diplomat who had the ability to lead stars – who often had frequent injuries to contend with – and to transform them into a team.
