"leuchte auf" supports holiday camp for refugee children
A donation from the BVB Foundation "leuchte auf" ("light up") amounting to €5,209.00 has enabled a group of refugee children to attend a holiday camp. "leuchte auf" paid them a visit and was warmly welcomed by the children and support staff from the Sport Youth at the City Sport Association (SSB) Dortmund.
Together with 50 other children from Dortmund and environs, the group was able to spend a week at Sundern in Sauerland participating in a wide range of activities, such as games, sport, and other entertainments. Since the children had only had limited experience with the element of water previously, great emphasis was placed on a swimming course during the holiday. The refugee children, who in the past had suffered extremely traumatic experiences, and whose new beginning in their adopted home had not always run smoothly, had here the opportunity to recover from the everyday and simply be children. "It is wonderful to see how relaxed and happy the children are at the holiday camp here at Lake Sorpe, and it is hugely impressive at the same time how all the children participating attempt to integrate without giving it a second thought, and that it is irrelevant in the community whether the children belong to the refugee group or not," said Marco Rühmann, the Foundation Manager of "leuchte auf"
The BVB foundation has provided financial support in previous years for summer camps provided by the Sport Youth at the City Sport Association (SSB) Dortmund, which were attended by socially deprived children and youths. This year's donation meant that a group of young refugees were able to attend a summer camp for the first time.
